Program Description

Career professionals with registered health information administrator (RHIA) credentials are in high demand today by hospitals, clinics, and other health-related agencies. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, that growth is expected to not only continue but outpace many other industries. At Stephens, our program is designed to provide the academic challenge, practical real-world experience, and one-on-one mentoring it takes to graduate well prepared to excel in this high-growth field.

HIA at Stephens

We were the first to offer a distance-learning program for health information management professionals and we’re still the innovators today. We have a long tradition of providing a solid HIA education that delivers a comprehensive understanding of business administration; healthcare systems; and medical and ethical requirements so students get the credentials they need (and conveniently, too). We’re proud of our long-standing excellent exam pass rate, and we are members of AHIMA and active in the industry.

Career Outlook

Working for a healthcare facility, the government, or a third-party provider, career paths may include quality assurance, compliance, legal/privacy, health records management, consulting or auditing. The right credentials and experience can lead to management and supervisory positions with excellent growth potential.

Graduate Requirements

Students must complete 120 semester hours to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Administration from Stephens College, including 69 specified semester hours in HIA coursework, 30 semester hours of specified general education courses, and 21 semester hours of electives. A grade of C or better must be achieved in all HIA foundation and core courses and an overall 2.5-grade point average in the HIA major must be achieved to fulfill graduation requirements. Transfer credits may be awarded for previous college coursework. Classes are 100% online and designed for working professionals. Students will work with the HIA Program Director to design a degree plan around their professional and personal commitments.
