The two-year Master of Science Program (ScM) is designed for students preparing for Ph.D. programs or considering upper-level research positions in academia, government, or industry.

The degree is constructed to provide students with a capacity to perform independent research and a firm understanding of research principles and practices.

In addition to the required coursework, ScM students conduct one or two laboratory rotations, take a written comprehensive examination at the conclusion of the first year, complete original research under the guidance of a faculty mentor, write a research-based thesis, and present the research in a seminar.

The remaining credits are flexible and may be individualized based on the student’s interests and career aspirations. Students may take courses offered in MMI or in other departments within and outside of the School.

The deadline to apply to the ScM Program is April 15 for the training program beginning the following September. Fully completed applications are reviewed and admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis. Early application submission is recommended.

Application fee waivers are available for applicants to MMI graduate programs who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents of the U.S. and meet additional eligibility criteria. Prospective students that do not meet eligibility criteria in these categories may request an application fee waiver with justification. Applicants may request a fee waiver by emailing Alan Scott, Ph.D. at ascott5@jhu.edu with the subject line “SOPHAS Fee Waiver for MMI” to request a waiver. Waivers must be requested by November 16, 2020, for applications to the doctoral program and by May 1, 2021, for master's degree programs.

Please note: fee waivers must be issued before submitting your application. We cannot issue reimbursements for the application fee.
