Introduction
The Master's Degree in Biotechnology and Medical Biology offers a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical training in biological research, with a focus on the biological processes underlying human physiology and pathology. Students will gain intensive training in the research laboratories of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute or other linked institutions in Italy or abroad. At the culmination of the course, students will present a written dissertation, based on a short yet complete research project. This will enable students to personally design a research project, generate and interpret data, and communicate their findings to other researchers through both oral and written presentations in English.
The teaching methodology of the course is designed to encourage active learning, with a focus on "student-centered" and "self-directed" learning. Top-down learning is complemented by bottom-up learning, which aims to solve issues arising during the research project.
The San Raffaele Scientific Institute provides students with an interdisciplinary and stimulating research environment that promotes encounters of people and massive flows of ideas. The institute is located on the same campus as the Ospedale San Raffaele, which is an internationally recognized center of excellence in numerous areas of biomedical research, and is part of the San Donato Group, one of the most prominent research centers and hospitals in Europe.
Upon graduation, nearly all of the Master's degree graduates are in paid employment or training within a few months after their thesis dissertation. They can choose to pursue further studies, such as a Ph.D. in the life sciences, or apply their expertise to science-based careers, such as lab management, research administration, research funding, intellectual property or strategic planning in biotech industries. In all these careers, the ability to retrieve and evaluate current knowledge, plan new research, generate and analyze data, and communicate the results are essential. The training is hands-on, and students will have the opportunity to execute a short but complete research project and present their findings to a thesis committee of experts.
